Mary Bunten’s work has appeared in SLAB, Evening Street Review, Litbreak, The Opiate, SAVEUR, Houston Press, Austin Chronicle, and elsewhere. Her MFA is from the University of Houston, where she was awarded a C. Glenn Cambor Imprint Fellowship. She taught creative writing at the University of Kansas and worked as Executive Director of The Writers Place, a literary center in Kansas City.

About My Wild Garden blog
I’m an enthusiastic gardener living in the Kansas City area.
In 2020, I was looking for new ways to connect with readers. As my interest in gardening deepened, I started blogging about mine, hoping that some would be interested in reading what I had to say as I trained my eye and developed my skills.
Kansas City is full of beautiful gardens. Our area has interesting, varied topography, and supports an enormous variety of plants. Some may disagree but I’m originally from Houston and I think the climate here is great. Kansas City also has a rich gardening community, with wonderful public and private gardens, and organizations that support almost every gardening interest, from growing food to gardening with native plants. Geniuses live here. I’ve been lucky enough to talk to several for this blog.
Although I’m no longer updating the blog as of 2026, I’m still gardening. In that way, My Wild Garden is still going strong.
